 IV.  General Program Information

Boats: Our club teaches sailors of optimists, sunfish, lasers and club 420s.

First year junior sailors need not own their own boat and may sail as a group with an instructor on a SYC club owned Hunter. Returning sailors must own or rent their own boat for their own exclusive use. Sailors may sail Opti, Sunfish, 420 or Laser. Each child sailing an Opti must have his/her own boat. There are two club owned Optimists and three club 420s, available on a rental basis through our Sailing Director Geoff Loffredo. Boat assignments will be confirmed at the discretion of the Sailing Director Geoff Loffredo, based upon experience, age, weight requirements, sailing skills, and boat availability. Children who have previously enrolled in our 420 program will have priority in renting a 420. Any sailor renting a club 420 or Opti must pay a rental fee of $250.00 per sailor, per 4-week session (or $400.00 per sailor for a full season) and must complete the rental form attached.

Age: A child must be eight years old as of June 24, 2018 in order to participate in the Program. All sailors who are new to the program shall submit a copy of his/her birth certificate along with registration forms.

Swim Test: Weather and water conditions permitting, all sailors must pass the following swim test: swim 50 yards with any stroke, tread water for 3 minutes, and swim with and without a PFD. A swim test will be administered on June 25, 2018 for any new sailors in the program.

Please dress accordingly with a bathing suit, life jacket, and closed-toed rubber soled swim shoes, and please bring a towel, sunscreen, a hat and water.

Clothing/Accessory Requirements:

•        Life Jackets (PFD): All participants and instructors are required to provide and wear their own properly fined US Coast Guard approved PFD at all times.

•       Shoes: Sailors will be required to wear closed-toed shoes such as sailing boots, sneakers or water shoes

•        Whistle

Class Levels/Goals: The Program tries to be flexible and accommodating to meet the needs of all sailors. The beginner  sailor  is able to rig a sailboat  and comfortably  sail away from  the dock to a given point and back  again  in a  light  to moderate wind.  An intermediate sailor will be able to compete on any given racecourse and be fully competent at a club racing level. The advanced sailor will be confident in all aspects of boat handling and seamanship and be able to race competitively in a regional regatta. In addition, the advanced sailor should have a complete understanding of racing ethics and how they apply in different situations.  Placement and scheduling is left to the discretion of the Sailing Program and Head instructor.

Sailing Organizations & Membership: The SYC is a member of the PGJSA, all sailors in the Junior Program must be members of the Peconic-Gardiners Junior Sailing Association (PSJSA). This association schedules, promotes, and runs instructor training clinics and regattas for Member Clubs. Membership also gives SYC sailors many opportunities to participate in regattas, clinics and social events with other junior sailors. The PGJSA dues ($20) are included in the attached fee schedule.

Registration Due Date: Registration forms and payments must be received by May 1, 2018.
